Caution is key to safe Fourth of July

ORANGE — The Fourth of July holiday is a great summer event for families and friends and fireworks, but, occasionally, it can prove tragic because of unsafe practices involving fireworks.

The National Council on Fireworks Safety regularly promotes the safe and responsible use of consumer fireworks every year, especially during the Fourth of July. Following many of the suggestions below will help keep your fireworks activities safe and happy.
A priority for those using fireworks at any time should be the inclusion of a responsible adult to supervise any and all fireworks activities. Also, fireworks should never be given to children.
While using fireworks, safety glasses should be utilized for those lighting the explosives. Also, only one firework should be lit at a time and the person doing the lighting should move away quickly. It is suggested that adults read all cautionary labels and the descriptions, prior to lighting the explosive, to understand what the firework does.
Another important factor in using fireworks is to use them in the outdoors where there is a clear area away from buildings and vehicles.
“Consumers should be aware of where their fireworks come from; only buy from licensed stores, stands and tents,” stated Nancy Blogin, President of the National Council on Fireworks Safety, on the agency’s official website. “A designated shooter should prepare a shooting area, carefully read the label of each firework and understand exactly what the firework will do and refrain from consuming alcohol. Planning makes for a safe and fun backyard fireworks display.”
