VIDOR — News of two Vidor police officer’s heroic action to save two young children from a house fire was recognized by US Rep. Randy Weber, R-Texas this week.
Congressman Weber visited Vidor where he presented Officer Ashton Moss and Officer Michael Stephenson with a Congressional Record which will be preserved in the Capitol, flags that were flown over the Capitol and a Challenge Coin to recognize their courageous, life-saving actions.”
“Our law enforcement officers are the backbone of Southeast Texas,” Weber said in a statement. “We are truly blessed to have Officers Moss and Stephenson safeguarding our community and stepping up to save the lives of two young boys. Their swift and selfless response is a shining example of the best that law enforcement has to offer—timely heroics in the service of others. It was an honor to present these gentlemen with a small token of our community’s gratitude for their remarkable service.”
The officers were heralded for their actions on a call of a residential house fire around 1:49 a.m. Sept. 10 in the 900 block of Pin Oak.
When officers arrived, the structure was fully engulfed in flames, and the mother of two children told officers her children were inside, according to previous reporting.
In an attempt to free the children from the house, Officer Stephenson attempted to dislodge a window air conditioning unit that was mounted on the window of the room the children were in. Once he removed the A/C unit, Stephenson and Moss were able to reach inside and assist a 7-year-old and 9-year-old as they climbed through to safety. Shortly after the kids were safely outside the home, flames reached the room the children had been occupying.
The children were taken to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
