Orangefield ISD board member Marc Wernig, Place IV, resigned from his position this week, before a regular school board meeting that was set to consider his possible censure and possible action from the board.

Wernig had been previously arrested in 2023 for a DWI charge and was out on bond and the new DWI charge is a violation of that bond, according to officials.

Werning had been a board member for the ISD since 2014, according to district records. He ran unopposed in 2022 while he was serving as board president.

“Mr. Wernig has actually sent his resignation letter this morning,” said Laura Clark, board of trustees president. “ We discussed what our next steps would be, and we came out and accepted his resignation. The reason we didn’t meet was because he had resigned; had he not, we would have moved to censure him.”

A DWI charge is a Class B misdemeanor under the Texas Penal Code with a punishment of up to 180 days in county jail and a maximum fine of $2,000.

A second DWI charge becomes a Class A misdemeanor with a punishment of up to a year in county jail and a maximum fine of $4,000.

The board will meet again in March to find an interim board member to fill his vacant position.
