To The Leader
On Tuesday, March 26, 2019, students from Tekoa Academy of Accelerated Studies in Port Arthur and Orange graduated from Girls’ STEM Academy at Space Center Houston. Twenty-five middle school girls learned about NASA’s future missions to Mars. Students learned how to program robots, pilot drones, and work together as a team to simulate a mission to Mars.
Their mission was to fly a drone from Earth to Mars. Then, they had to land the drone on a rover. Next, the rover had to collect rock samples and recover another disabled rover. Finally, the drone could launch again for its return trip to Earth.
Each girl played a role in the mission. Mission Control gave directions, MARCO’s relayed communications, Flight Team piloted the drone, and Reaper drove the robot.
On May 1, 2019, Tekoa Academy of Accelerated studies will celebrate its 20th anniversary.
