Deputy injured, 1 dead following Orangefield incident

ORANGEFIELD — A call of a person reportedly having a mental health episode led to a violent confrontation in which a deputy was injured and a person fatally shot.
Orange County Sheriff’s Office received a call at approximately 8:01 a.m. Wednesday regarding a man with a history of mental health issues making threats towards neighbors, according to information from the Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred in the 3600 block of Granger Lane.
A deputy arrived on scene at 8:20 a.m. and began speaking with the man and a violent confrontation ensued.
The deputy discharged his firearm after being assaulted by the man. Justice of the Peace Joy Dubose-Simonton pronounced the man dead at the scene, according to a witness at the scene.
The deputy was transported by ambulance to a hospital for multiple injuries.
There was heavy law enforcement presence at the scene including Texas Rangers who are assisting in the investigation.
The incident led Orangefield schools to go on a brief lockdown due to a potential threat.
The lockdown was announced at 8:41 a.m. via social media and lifted at approximately 8:55 a.m. Wednesday due to law enforcement being involved in an isolated incident near the Orangefield ISD.
