UIL is announcing the next step in allowing students to return to campus for UIL related summer strength and conditioning activities and marching band rehearsals this month.

TEA has now released updated information allowing student groups such as cheerleaders, drill teams, music groups other than marching band, and others to begin practices, at local school administration discretion, in school indoor facilities on June 9, 2020 within these guidelines which can be found on the TEA website: https://tea.texas.gov/sites/default/files/covid/covid19-Training-and-Conditioning-Guidance-for-Non-UIL-Activities.pdf

With this new information, UIL is now revising the guidelines for summer strength and conditioning activities and marching band rehearsals. We have posted these updates on the UIL website: https://www.uiltexas.org/covid-19-information

For complete details please see the UIL website, but updates are briefly summarized below:

Athletics:

  • 50% indoor capacity approved beginning 6/22/20
  • Increased group sizes approved beginning 6/22/20
  • The 20:1 student to staff ratio is removed effective immediately

Marching Band:

  • 50% indoor capacity approved beginning 6/22/20
  • Grouping limitations removed effective immediately with specified distancing requirements still in effect

Schools should continue to staff for these activities to ensure safety standards are met. It is recommended that schools identify a compliance officer to oversee effective use of these protocols. With those standards in place, the requirement for schools to have one staff member present for every 20 students participating has been removed.

UIL continues to work closely with state officials as we consider appropriate further revisions to our plans. We will communicate any changes in these plans as they are available.
