Orange area woman, 85, dies in 2 vehicle crash

NEWTON COUNTY – The Texas Department of Public Safety has released the name of a woman from Orange that was killed in a two vehicle crash Monday.
She is identified as 85-year-old Ann Burns of Orange. The passenger, 90-year-old Charles Burns of Orange, was hospitalized.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers are investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash on Highway 87, south of Trout Creek, that occurred at approximately 3:03 p.m. Monday.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates a 2023 Buick Enclave and a 2015 Freightliner Cascadia towing 2019 Utility trailer were traveling north. It is reported that the Buick attempted to make a u-turn on the road and was struck by the Freightliner.
The driver of the Buick, identified as Ann Burns was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Dana Ashmore. One passenger, Charles Burns, was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment of possible life-threatening-injuries.
The driver of the freightliner, identified as 58-year-old Joseph Mwangi of Willis, was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
