Lady Bears win Bobcat Relays, Orangefield boys claim second overall

ORANGEFIELD — Local track teams are fine tuning their performances as district contests loom ahead at the end of the month, and many gave exemplary performances at the Mike Gentry Bobcat Relays on Thursday.

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears dominated the girls competition and won the overall title with 165.5 points. Orangefield finished second with 97 points and Bridge City finished third with 96.5 team points. Haylee Spears of Orangefield won the girls discus by more than 10-feet with a

throw of 121-feet. In the shot put, it was Abby McDonald of Bridge City winning first place with a toss of 34’ 10”. Nicole Sasser of Bridge City won the triple jump with a distance of 35’ 11”, while Dinah Tippins of Little Cypress-Mauriceville finished leapt 17’ 5.25” in the girls long jump. Janet Le of LC-M won the pole vault with a height of 10-feet, while teammate

Mallory Russell won the high jump with a height of 5-feet. The running events began with the girls 3200 meters and Lady Bears runner Allyson Welch won the race with a time of 13:53.92. The LC-M 4 x 100 meter relay team of Le, Barlcay, Epps and Meadows won the event with a time of 50.06

seconds. Janel Le of LC-M added another first place win to her resume on Thursday by claiming the girls 100 meter dash in a time of 13.12 seconds. Paisley Angelle of LC-M continued to dominate the hurdle events as she won the 100 meter hurdles in 16.37 seconds and also won the 300 meter hurdles in 49.20 seconds.

Dinah Tippins of LC-M roared to victory in the girls 200 meter dash with a time of 26.17 seconds, while the Lady Bears 4 x 400 meter relay team of Johnson, McClain, Meadows and Angelle won first place in 4:25.58 to help win the girls overall title.

In the boys division, Nederland claimed the overall title with 122 points, while Orangefield was second with 106 points and Vidor finished third with 81.5 points. William Crosby of Orangefield won the boys shot put with a toss of 41’ 6”, while Ja’Mikael Davis of West Orange-Stark won the triple jump with a distance of 42’ 7.50” and the long jump with a leap of 19’ 11.50”. Zach Morrow of Orangefield cleared a height of 14-feet in the pole vault, and teammate Owen Simms won the high jump with a height of 6-feet.

Bridge City’s Jacob Rougeau started off the running events with a first place win in the boys 3200 meter run with a time of 11:38.84. Shay Stacy of Vidor won the boys 800 meter race with a time of 2:08.39. Shay also won the 300 meter high- hurdles with a time of 40.34 seconds and Orangefield’s Steyle Spurlock used a time of 23.37 seconds to win the 200 meter dash.

The Orangefield Bobcats 4 x 100 meter relay team of Lucus, Maning, Spurlock and Morrow claimed first place in the event with a time of 43.68 seconds. The West Orange-Stark Mustangs 4 x 200 meter relay team of Thornton, Degay, Myers and Dugas placed first with a time of 1:33.68.

In the final contest of the night, the Vidor Pirates 4 x 400 meter relay team of Welch, Norton, Cook and Stacy won the event with a time of 3:36.41, more than 2.4 seconds ahead of the next team, to close out the Bobcat Relays.
