The Orange Leader

WEST ORANGE — The Lumberton Raiders took an early lead and blew the game open in the second-half to claim a 42-23 District 18-4A victory over the West Orange-Stark Mustangs on Tuesday night at G&G Arena inside the West Orange Cove Event Center.

Both teams used a strong defensive effort to keep the offenses in check through most of the contest. The Mustangs pressured the Raiders from one of the court to the other, but Lumberton still lead 9-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Clay Hatch scored five points in the first quarter and four points in the second quarter to propel the Raiders offense. It was a slam dunk by Tyler Breeden that pushed Lumberton to a 17-7 lead at halftime as the Mustangs offense had difficulty getting the ball in the hoop. Miketavion Davis led the Mustangs with five points in the first-half of the game.

The Raiders took control of the game from the start of the third quarter as Lumberton scored the first six points of the quarter on the way to a 27-13 lead at the end of the third. Hatch added another six points during the quarter for Lumberton.

The Mustangs tried to open the offense up in the fourth quarter with fast breaks following rebounds and steals and three point shooting, but WO-S still was unable to sink the shots they needed to gain ground on Lumberton. The Raiders would go on to win 42-23.

Hatch remained red hot as he scored another six points for the Raiders to lead all scores with 21 points for the night, while teammate Rysen Hooker added seven points in the fourth to finish with 11 points for the game.

Ja’Mikael Davis scored four points for West Orange-Stark in the fourth quarter and led the Mustangs for the game with eight points. Miketavion Davis finished the game with seven points.

The Mustangs (4-6) have a long road ahead to make the playoffs needing to win the last two games of district play and needing help along the way. WO-S will travel to Silsbee on Friday, Feb. 7, and return home on Tuesday, Feb. 11 to take on the Jasper Bulldogs for the final regular season game.
