NEDERLAND — Local artist Alice Thibeault who worked with the Orange Mardi Gras in the past has something new to her repertoire —she is the sole mask designer for Christian Dior for their holiday popup events in New York City, Miami and Atlanta.
Thibeault, owner of Originals by Alice, has her work displayed for sale at Maskarade on Royal Street in New Orleans. Several months ago a representative of Christian Dior visited the New Orleans store and asked the owner for recommendations of artists for their upcoming holiday masquerade theme.
The owner suggested Thibeault.
Thibeault described when she first learned Christian Dior was interested in her work.
“My daughter and I had gone to see Beetlejuice and I had my phone off. After the show was over we were leaving in the car,” she said. “I said Gilly (her daughter) look at this. Am I crazy? The owner of Maskerade said she had given my name to a rep from Christian Dior.”
Soon Thibeault was communicating with the company and showing prototypes. They worked together and Christian Dior opted to accept the designs.
The order at first was for 300 pieces. That grew to 500 pieces. Thibeault began work in October and her last shipment goes out Dec. 29, she said. Currently, she’s working on the final 125 masks, she said.
When Thibeault was contacted to be part of the project she at first thought it was a joke, she said. The reality set in when she was signing paperwork with Christian Dior.
Thibeault’s work has been seen from costume design and custom headpieces to Mardi Gras back pieces, vintage and steampunk styles.
