Two officers with the Vidor Police Department are being hailed as heroes after saving two young children from a house fire.

According to Vidor Police Chief Rod Carroll, Vidor PD responded to a call about a residential fire around 1:49 a.m. on Sep. 10 in the 900 block of Pin Oak.

When officers arrived, the structure was fully engulfed in flames, and the mother of two children told officers her children were inside.

In an attempt to free the children from the house, Officer Michael Stephenson attempted to dislodge a window air conditioning unit that was mounted on the window of the room the children were in. Once he removed the A/C unit, Officer Stephenson and Officer Ashton Moss were able to reach inside and assist a 7-year-old and 9-year-old as they climbed through to safety.

Shortly after the kids were safely outside the home, flames reached the room the children had been occupying.

The children were taken to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
