Funeral services for Lynette Monk, 87, of Lufkin were held Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Congregational Church with The Reverend Randall K. Green officiating.

Graveside services were held Thursday, June 6, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Leesville Cemetery in Leesville, Louisiana.

Mrs. Monk was born June 27, 1936 in Lake Charles, Louisiana to the late Hallie (Retzlaff) and Rev. Edward R. Haug, and passed away peacefully Friday, May 31, 2024 in Lufkin, Texas.

Lynette, the daughter of a long-time Methodist minister and District Superintendent, began organ lessons in the 6th grade and started playing for worship services at the age of 16.

She went on to study music at Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana, with the pipe organ as her major instrument.

For more than 40 years she served as church organist in every place she lived in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, including Christ Church, where she was a charter member.

In addition to her interest in the pipe organ, Mrs. Monk began directing handbell choirs over two decades ago and she was the founding director of Christ Church’s own Renaissance Ringers.

Lynette was a member and past president of the Lufkin Historical and Literary Club and co-chair of their 100-year celebration. She was in the Patron Society of the Houston Grand Opera for 20 years and was active in the Angelina Arts Alliance.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, John Monk of Lufkin; son, Steven Monk and wife Tami of Phoenix, Arizona; daughter, Kathy Monk Berroth of Phoenix, Arizona; and grandchildren, Andrea Wright and husband Matt of Phoenix, Arizona, John Berroth of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Mikayla Monk of Phoenix, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Cynthia Haug and Maxine Haug.
