Orange, Bridge City, and Vidor Public Libraries are gearing up for some summer reading fun with the annual Summer Reading Programs.

Orange Public Library will host the program from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12 – June 13. Registration begins on Monday, June 3. The theme is A Universe of Stories.

Katie Venable, of the Orange Public Library, speaks to Golden K Kiwanis on Wednesday, concerning the Summer Reading Program starting on June 12, 2019.

“The Dewey Decimal system is not taught in schools anymore,” Katie Venable said. “So I encourage the children to explore other areas of the library.”

Venable added several children discovered the history section or love for poetry.

“Kids need encouragement,” Venable said.

The purpose of the programs is to encourage students to read throughout the summer in order to maintain and increase reading skills they have developed through the school year.

Registration for the programs begins on Monday, June 3. Children will receive a book bag and a reading log to record how much time they read or someone treads to them. The children are rewarded with ‘library bucks’ to spend at the Library Store at the end of the program.

Library cards are free to City of Orange residents. Nonresidents may purchase a student card for $5.

The programs are open for children 1st-6th grade. Parents are required to remain in the library for the duration of the program.

For Pre-schoolers and younger, there will be Read To Me from 10:45 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. in the library’s Children’s Room.
