Heritage House to feature special exhibit

A historic location in Orange County is trying something new and it begins this weekend.

The Heritage House Museum, located at 905 W. Division St. in downtown Orange, presents a special exhibition, “Paper in Pieces, Larger Than Life, Part II The Art of Avril Falgout.” The exhibit will be on display from Sept. 15 – Oct. 16, but a special opening celebration will be held from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 13.

“People seem to have forgotten about us,” said Linda Garrett, office manager of the Heritage House of Orange County Association, Inc. “All we have done the past few years is our annual Christmas open house event with Santa Claus, but we want to do more events and have exhibits in our new building.”

Avril Falgout is an 18-year-old woman from Southeast Texas with a knack for creating art. Despite her young age, Avril is the only high school student to win the Lawndale Big Show in Houston and is the youngest person to win The Art Studio, Inc. Members Juried Art Show in Beaumont.

This show will feature Avril’s life-sized paper mache sculptures on display in the Heritage House and its new adjacent building. The show will also present a collection of early 20th century period settings with contemporary artist interpreted figures.

“This is what we hope is the first of many events,” Garrett added. “We used to have other events, like our ‘Past Times Days,’ but we haven’t been able to do that for quite a few years. We are expecting a really good turnout on Sunday and are excited to be able to do this.”

The Heritage House Museum is open from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday each week. Call 409-886-5385 or find Heritage House of Orange County on Facebook.
