WEST ORANGE — With the closing of two schools and school times changing, West Orange City Council approved ordinance 442 on the establishment and regulation of school zones, times of school zones, and speed limits in schools zones.

The area between Newton Street from Burnett Street to Bonham Street has been declared a school zone.

During the 30 minutes prior and after to the start of regular class of the day and 30 minutes prior and after the last class of the day vehicles will be required to travel 20 miles per hour through the school zone.

The ordinance took effect immediately upon the council passing the ordinance during the Monday evening meeting.

Mayor Roy McDonald was authorized as the city’s representative pertaining to the application and possible award of DR-4332 HMGP on behalf of OCWCID #2.

The funds from the grant will be for the elevation of several units and lift stations to above flood stage level.

Arceneaux Wilson and Cole President Joe Wilson said, “This will add generating capacity so you can still deliver water and take care of sanitary in the case of another Harvey.”

Code Enforcement Dean Fuller said the current height for new construction in West Orange is at nine feet.

Council also approved Police chief Michael Stelly to execute a Memorandum of Understanding between the city and West Orange Cove CISD.

“The school is planning to start its own police department,” Stelly said. “This is an agreement to assist them.”
