Pinehurst Chief of Police Fred Hanauer addressed the city council during a regular meeting held Tuesday, July 10 and announced his department has formed a Special Weapons And Tactics team (SWAT) within a department consisting of six full-time officers and three part-time officers.

Hanauer also announced his engagement with the Law Enforcement Support Office (LESO) program is seeing results including the recent acquisition of a HUMVEE that can travel through 30 inches of water, a ¾ ton Blazer, and soon to be acquired M1038 carrier that will traverse up to 36 inches of water.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety website the National defense Authorization Act authorizes the Secretary of Defense to transfer excess Department of Defense (DoD) personal property to Federal, state and local Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA) with special emphasis given to counter drug and counter terrorism.

The City of Pinehurst is one of over 13,000 local law enforcement agencies who have taken advantage of the program.

The City Council unanimously approved a recommendation made by Code Enforcement Officer Harry Vine for Charles Darden to place a manufactured home on a private lot at 3454 Heron Street with a variance to allow Darden to locate and occupy a recreational vehicle (RV) for no more than eight weeks while the manufactured home is on order.

Vine also recommended and the council approved the application by Colleen Porter to place a manufactured home on a private lot at 3602 Raven Street with a variance to locate the manufactured home next to the existing home for a period of time not to exceed one year.

In other news, Hanauer announced the first annul Cuff and Hoses blood drive to “honor our law enforcement and firefighters.”

The blood drive will be held at the Pinehurst Police Department Courtroom at 2493 Martin Luther King Drive, Thursday, July 19 from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM.

Hanauer read from the announcement, “First responders, law enforcement, and firefighters give themselves to their communities every day. Also, many give blood to make sure it is available when needed.”

“During our Cuffs and Hoses blood drive,” Hanauer read, “you can show your support by giving blood in their honor.”
