Cats, Cardinals snag morning wins at Cardinal Classic

BRIDGE CITY – Both the Orangefield Bobcats and Bridge City Cardinals snagged a pair of early morning wins at the Cardinal Classic Basketball Tournament Thursday.
The Bobcats toppled the Evadale Rebels 56-47 in their first game of the day while the Cardinals trounced the Anahuac Panthers 63-23.
The Bobcats fell behind early in the first quarter against the Rebels but scored eight of the last nine points to grab a 17-14 edge. Bobcat Kaiden DuBose scored nine of his 11 points in the first quarter after he buried three three-pointers in the period. Evadale’s Jonathan Gravis scored 12 of his team-high 17 points in the first quarter as he connected on four three-point bombs in the first eight minutes.
The Rebels outscored the Bobcats 14-10 in the second quarter to go up 28-27 at intermission. Aven Lathrop scored seven points in the quarter for the Bobcats. Lathrop had a superb all-around performance for the Bobcats as he tallied a game-high 19 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Lathrop led a big Orangefield surge in the third period 12 the Bobcats outpointed the Rebels 12-2 in the period. Lathrop had five points in the quarter, including a big three-pointer and Dylan Williams had four points in the quarter as the Bobcats built up a 39-30 cushion heading into the final stanza. Williams finished with 10 points and six boards.
Lathrop tallied seven more points in the final period to help keep the Rebels at bay. Evadale forward Jacob Splawn scored eight of his 12 points in the last quarter.
The Bobcats outrebounded the Rebels 39-28.
Tyrone Waggoner had six rebounds for the Bobcats while Zach Dischler hauled down five.
Splawn led the Rebels with eight rebounds while Brandon Totten had six boards and Matthew Graves five.
The Bobcats finished with 20 turnovers while the Rebel had 14.
Orangefield finished 14-of-20 from the free-throw line while Evadale was 11-of-19.
The Cardinals manhandled the Panthers right out of the chute, outscoring Anahuac 16-2 in the first quarter and never looked back.
Hunter Wiegreffe paced the Cardinal arsenal with 17 points, 13 of them coming in a first half that saw the Redbirds lead 36-10 at intermission.
Bridge City ripped eight three-pointers in the contest.
Grant Boudreaux ripped three three-pointers and finished with 12 points. Point guard Chason Burch had nine points on three-three-point bombs. Coy Bryant also canned two three-pointers for six points and Colton Weeks added six points.
Jarvis Perry powered the Anahuac arsenal with 11 points.
