A man facing evading arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia and tased twice, was refused by the Orange County Jail on Saturday night.
Just before 11 p.m., Pinehurst Police Officer J. Lockett, was on routine patrol in the 3400 block of West Martin Street when he observed a suspicious male walking down the street.
The man was identified as Anthony Williams, 26, of Orange.
Suddenly, Williams took off running from the scene in an attempt to evade the officer, according to a press release from the City of Pinehurst Police Department.
The officer gave several commands for the suspect to stop but he continued towards 37th Street. Once Lockett caught up to the suspect at the corner of 37th Street and Martin, he deployed his taser but it was ineffective due to the prongs not making full contact with the suspects body.
The chase continued down 37th Street to the corner of Mockingbird, where the officer was able to catch up to Williams and deploy his taser for a second time after giving Williams a verbal command to stop.
Williams was finally apprehended and placed in custody by Officer Lockett. Upon doing a search of Williams, he was found to be in possession of a glass pipe.
Williams was transported to the Orange County jail but refused by the jail nurse.
Williams has a pending charge of evading arrest or detention and possession of drug paraphernalia.
If convicted, he faces up to one year in jail and a $5,000 fine for the evading charge, and a $266 fine for possession of drug paraphernalia.
Pinehurst Police Department was assisted in the arrest by the Bridge City, West Orange and Orange Police Departments as well as the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the State Game Warden’s Office.
