Special to The Leader

West Orange – Stark Middle School eighth grade students recently toured Rice University. The students learned about college requirements, goal setting, and identifying interests.

Approximately 40 WO-S Middle School students participated in the Rice University tour. They were welcomed by two Rice University student representatives who explained college requirements in terms of high school grades, SAT/ACT scores, and extra-curricular activities. Their presentation also shared information regarding the differences in salaries of graduates of high school, graduates of college with bachelors’ degrees, and college graduates with masters’ degrees.

Following the Rice college student presentation, the WO-S Middle School students split into two groups and toured the campus, learning the history of Rice University.

The students visited the library, the Architecture Building, the Academic Quad, the Chapel, and enjoyed lunch in the Student Center.

WO-S Middle School Dean of Instruction Jennifer Tippett, a chaperone, said, “Our students really enjoyed the trip. When we left Rice University, the students were actively discussing their future majors and colleges. Some of our students are now even planning to attend Rice.”

West Orange – Stark Middle School Assistant Principal Robert Collins coordinated event.

Collins said, “This is WO-S Middle School’s second year to tour Rice University. Other college visits have been scheduled for later in the school year.”
