Voters will return to the polls May 28 to decide a winner in the Republican District 21 state representative race.

The outcome of Tuesday’s Primary showed Texas Speaker of the House Dade Phelan and rival David Covey neck-and-neck in their bids for the seat.

Neither incumbent Phelan nor Covey pulled more than the 50 percent of the turnout necessary to win.

According to the Texas Secretary of State unofficial election results, Phelan secured 14,547 votes for 43.24 percent of the turnout, and Covey came in with 15,579 or 46.31 percent of the ballots cast.

A third candidate, Alicia Davis, garnered 3,517 votes for 10.45 percent of the ballots cast.

Election officials said this would be the only local run off on the upcoming ballot.

The Primary this week was only for the two main parties, Republican and Democratic. Candidates can have their name placed on the general election ballot if they are not affiliated with a political party, according to the Texas Secretary of State. The Green and Libertarian candidates nominate candidates via convention.

The winners from each party’s Primary are placed on the Nov. 5 general election ballot.
