Lady Pirates pummel Jasper

VIDOR — The Vidor Lady Pirates scored early and often and crushed the Jasper Lady Bulldogs, 78-42, to claim another win in District 18-4A basketball.

The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first period before Jasper scored on a free throw by Raelyn Morisey and then reeled off another seven consecutive points on the way to a 20-9 lead at the end of the first period. Vidor’s Hadlie Jackson led the way with eight points in the period.

Vidor started the second period with another quick scoring run as the Lady Pirates scored eight consecutive points. The Lady Pirates were red hot from the free throw line during the second period, as the team scored 12 of its 21 points for the period from the stripe. Allie Williams scored 10 points during the period, including three free throws, while Jasper’s Rocsan Hadnot led the Lady Bulldogs with six points during the second. Vidor led 41-21 at the break.

The third period started with the Lady Bulldogs using a pressure defense to force the Lady Pirates into several early mistakes, which Jasper took advantage of with a 9-3 scoring run to cut the Vidor lead to 14 points. The Lady Pirates shooting turned ice cold from the floor as Vidor was outscored in the third period, 13-9, which left Jasper trailing, 50-34, at the end of the period.

As cold as the Lady Pirates were in the third, the team turned red hot in the fourth period and outscored the Lady Bulldogs 28-8 in the final stanza and even built its biggest lead of 38 points before claiming the 78-42 victory.

Williams led all scorers with 22 points for the game, while her Vidor teammate Jackson finished the game with 21 points. Every Vidor Lady Pirates player managed to score at least one point in the game as well. Maci Clark led Jasper with 18 points.

The Lady Pirates will host the Lady Bears of Little Cypress-Mauriceville on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and then travel across Orange County on Friday, Jan. 31 to face the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs in the final game of the regular season as Vidor is on a bye on Friday, Feb. 4.
