Drunk driver strikes deputy with truck, flees scene

Newton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at approximately 9:05 p.m. Friday, March 1 in reference to a structure fire on Hwy. 12 east of State Hwy. 87 in the Deweyville area.
While working traffic control, a Newton County deputy sheriff was intentionally struck by a white Ford pickup.
The driver, identified at Scott Allen Gantt, of the pickup truck fled the scene traveling south on State Hwy. 87 into Orange County.
A Newton County deputy was in pursuit but list sight of the vehicle north of Abes Road.
Officers from Orange County Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and other witnesses located the abandoned vehicle at a residence several blocks north of Abes Road in Orange.
After a short stand off, the driver of the pickup came out of the house and surrendered without incident.
Deputy Wonders was transported by Acadian Ambulance to the Golden Triangle Emergency Center in Orange. He was treated for knee and foot injury and released.
He is now resting comfortably at home.
Gantt was arraigned by Judge Mike Greer on Saturday.
Gantt has been charged with aggravated assault on a public servant, accident involving injury, evading arrest/detention with a vehicle and driving while intoxicated.
Gantt’s total bonds are $151,500.
