Price Sr. passes at age 98

Just four weeks away from turning 99, Kelly O. Price Sr. passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2018.

Price held many titles during his life; including teacher, postal worker, real estate agent and owner of Geter Funeral Home.

Prior to starting his career with the Postal Service, Price taught at J.H. Rowe High School in Jasper, Texas, where he met and later married the love of his life.

He retired from the United States Postal Service after 37 years of service. After his retirement, Price started a second career and became the first black real estate agent in Orange and worked for Dal Sasso Realty Company for 20 years.

He was the owner and manager of Geter Funeral Home for 65 years.

Price served six years on the Orange City Council as Council Member Precinct One, a member of the Civil Service Commission, former board member of the Lutcher Stark Theatre, Director of the Orange Community Action Association, Director of the Neighborhood Development Association and served on the Board of the Orange Housing Authority.

He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and was a member of the Gate City Lodge, #31 of the Masons.

Price served as a Deacon and Trustee Board Member, of which he was the former Chairman of the Trustee Board with the Mount Sinai Baptist Church for more than 60 years. Until his death, he taught Sunday School for the Adult Men Class at Mount Sanai. He was the current local chapter President of the National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees. The Top Ladies of Distinction Oran Je Chapter recognized him as a Man of Valor. An honor bestowed upon honorees known for making a difference in community by giving back such as volunteering and mentoring the youth in the community.

West Orange Stark Mustangs will miss their most avid fan, as he attended every Wallace, North, Stark and WOS High School football games for the past 58 years.

He was the scoreboard keeper for Emma H. Wallace and M.B. North High Schools.

Price sat through a 2016 Mustang game with a broken hip, refusing to leave until the game ended and was recognized by the West Orange-Cove Consolidated Independent School District Board of Education as an outstanding fan.

He has traveled extensively through Europe and other foreign lands, with his fondest memory being of his trip to the Holy Land.

Price was married to Educator, Magnolia Lewis Price for 48 years, until her death in 1992. He leaves to celebrate his transition, son, Kelly Price, II and wife, Wythel of Houston, Texas; Terry Price and wife, Christine of Carrollton, Texas; granddaughter Sheri Price Jacks of Atlanta, Georgia; grandsons David Kelly Price, and Jaye Patterson Price and wife, Fernanda of Atlanta; Caleb Price and wife, Macy of Dallas, Texas and great granddaughter, Lakeland Price.

Visitation will be held 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Friday, April at Mr. Sinai Baptist Church, 1109 Second Street in Orange.

Eulogistic services will take place Saturday, April 28, at high noon at Mt. Sinai.

Eulogistic speaker will be Reverend Joe Green, pastor of St. Matthew Baptist Church in Boyce, Louisiana.

Interment will follow at the Autumn Oaks Cemetery on Highway 90 in Orange.
