Area football teams got in their first scrimmages of the year Friday as coaches got to look at plenty of young players looking to fill their varsity roster.
Over at Little Cypress-Mauriceville, the Battlin’ Bears looked impressive against the Coldspring Trojans.
The Bears’ offensive unit put up four quick scores against the Trojan defense.
Senior full back J’Lon Douglas had the first score with a 75-yard touchdown gallop along the left side.
Quarterback Adam Pope tossed a 75-yard touchdown bomb to standout receiver Katon Brown. Dameon Morris had a 55-yard touchdown scamper around the right side and Tyreke Brown hauled in a 75-yard touchdown pass from Pope down the right sideline.
Coldspring’s first offensive unit failed to move much against the Bears. LC-M defensive back Mark Netherley picked off a Coldspring pass deep in the LC-M end to thwart one drive.
The Bears added a touchdown late as did the Trojans.
The defending Class 4A Division II state champion West Orange-Stark Mustangs traveled to The Reservation to face a veteran Port Neches-Groves squad.
The Mustangs squeezed out a 16-14 victory in a game situation. Kicker Chad Dallas kicked a field goal with about five minutes remaining to put the Mustangs up to stay.
The Mustangs struck midway through the first quarter after a Chaka Watson touchdown pass.
The Indians countered when quarterback Roschon Johnson connected with Preston Riggs on a long touchdown pass.
PN-G answered to start the second half when Johnson and Riggs hooked up again, the second one coming on a 70-yard bomb.
The Mustangs got a long scoring run to trim it to 14-13.

Over at Orangefield, the Bobcats welcomed in the Shepherd Pirates.
Both teams were outstanding on defense.
The Bobcats’ first defensive unit controlled the line of scrimmage pretty much the whole way against the Pirates. Orangefield was able to force multiple turnovers in the controlled scrimmage, causing several fumbles while Jacob Harvey had a nice interception.
The Shepherd defense was just as stingy but the Bobcats found their vaunted running game at times. Fullback Blake Bradley busted through some nice holes for a few big gains. The Bobcats did score a touchdown late. Quarterback Mason Gonzales had a couple big runs in a row and then took it in for a score from two yards out.
The Bobcats added another late touchdown with their second unit as did the Pirates.
Bridge City made the short trek to Buna and looked impressive against the Cougars.
The Cardinals got a solid showing from its young offensive line as they replaced all five starters from last year. The Big Red defense played well in their first outing after returning nine starters of their District 10-4A Division I champions.
Bridge City found the end zone three times while the Cougars scored one touchdown.
