HOUSTON —
Former Congressman Steve Stockman has defeated Stephen Takach for the Republican nomination for the 36th Congressional District in Southeast Texas.
The veteran politician from Beaumont is now the favorite to win the Republican-leaning district in the Nov. 6 general election. He will face Democrat Max Martin in that race.
Stockman and Takach were nearly tied in the May 29 primary, prompting the runoff. During the campaign, Stockman relied mostly on his name recognition to gather votes in an area where he served as congressman from 1995 to 1997.
Stockman calls himself a conservative Republican. On his campaign website, it says he supports securing the border and a federal balanced-budget amendment and opposes gun control, abortion and homosexual marriage.
