VIDOR —
A man who’s presence in Vidor is well known was recognized for providing a positive direction to help the city and community grow.
Chief of Police Dave Shows was named Vidor Citizen of the Year as well as being the keynote speaker during the 58th Annual Membership Banquet on Thursday, Jan. 31, at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Hall in Vidor.
Shows started his police career in June 1978 as the Rose City Marshall. He became a police officer with the Vidor Police Department in April 1980 and becoming Sergeant in 1981. Shows was named Vidor Chief of Police in December 2010.
“I am humbled by this award,” Shows said.
The 2013 Board of Directors were also recognized as part of Thursday’s celebration. Directors are Dickey Woodard, president; Ronnie Herrera, vice president; Greg Knost, treasurer; Johnnie Andrus, out-going president.
“It is time for me to take another position,” Andrus said. “We have a dream and it can become reality with ambassadors.”
Shows, as the speaker for the evening, gave a compelling speech for the need of mental health facilities in Orange County.
“I believe citizens should have their concealed handgun license,” Shows said. “If they are able to handle the responsibility.”
Shows also said that guns don’t kill people, the operators of the guns do.
“Changing the laws concerning guns is not the answer,” Shows said. “In ever school shooting, mental health was the issue.”
Shows said that in 1994 legislation was passed to on magazine capacity, five years before Columbine happened.
“Our children need to learn the value of human life,” Shows said.
Terry Woodard, past president of the chamber, was named as member of the year. Woodard was unable to attend the event, so his father accepted the award in his honor.
