At 4’9” and 78 pounds, Amy Newman’s tiny presence contradicts the huge decision the 12 year old West Orange – Stark Middle School seventh grade student recently made. She decided she wanted to help others; particularly, others who were fighting cancer.
“Most people who have cancer would love to have hair. So I just went full mode and shaved it off. After all, it will grow back,” Newman said.
Newman donated her hair in October at Kay’s Unique Hair Styles on MacArthur Drive in Orange.
“It was not at all scary because I knew that I really wanted to do this,” she said.
Newman has had several family members face cancer and wanted to do something to make a difference in someone’s battle with the disease.
When she began thinking about the hair donation, she shared her plan with her mother and also sought the opinions of friends and other family members.
Once she made her final decision to move forward and received parent permission, the action was quick and came during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“I had been wearing my hair long for the past two years. I don’t miss it at all,” she said.
Her family and friends fully support her decision.
Sherry Verrett, her mother, said, “I know that she is doing this to not only honor people in our family, but to also honor everyone who is battling cancer, who may be in remission, or who has lost their life to this disease.”
Her 13-inch donation of hair is now being processed into a hairpiece or wig for a cancer patient.
“I would definitely do it again,” Newman said.
