A child playing with a fire source could be the cause of an apartment fire on Thursday, according to officials.
The Orange Fire Department answered the call of a possible structure fire shortly after noon, Thursday, in the 500 block of Burton Street in Orange. A crew with Engine 5 happened to be across the street in response to a medical call of a person having chest pains, when a person come running up to them telling the emergency personnel of the fire occurring in the apartment across the street.
Personnel used a radio to contact dispatch and report the fire and request backup. Two other engines and a Chief’s vehicle with the Orange Fire Department quickly answered the call.
While units from the Orange Police Department worked to evacuate the building, firefighters attacked the fire and brought it under control within 10 minutes.
No injuries were reported and the occupants of the apartment, a woman and her children, had already evacuated the premises upon arrival of the fire department. The American Red Cross was called to the scene and will provide temporary assistance to the family.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it may have been caused by “a child playing with a lighter or matches,” according to an e-mail from Deputy Fire Chief Jerald Ziller.
