Texas Food Establishment Rules (TFER) considers ice as food unless ice is being used solely to cool down foods or drinks. TFER requires all foods to be labeled as well as having the name and address of the business of manufacturer, packer, or distributor according to rule 229.164 in the TFER Field Inspection Manual released in Sept. 2006.
The Orange County Health Inspector examined Spindletop Restaurant located at 1480 West Freeway Blvd. in Vidor. The establishment received an 82 out of a possible 100. Demerits are for in need of dating and labeling all foods in the cooler and freezer, several tomatoes with mold on the outside , storing foods on the floor in the cooler, and several gnats found in the food prep area.

• Super Food Mart located at 1519 37th Street in Orange. Score: 93. Demerits are for in need of name and address on all bags of ice sold.
• Orange Food Mart located at 4710 Meeks Drive in Orange. Score: 90. Demerits are for in need of name and address on all bags of ice sold, and dead roaches found in the storage room.
• Cypress Plaza located at 7014 North Highway 87 in Orange. Score: 90. Demerits are for in need of name and address on all bags of ice sold, mold found at the drink station, and slime found in the ice machine.
• Big M’s Shell Station located at 3118 Edgar Brown Drive in Orange. Score: 89. Demerits are for 87 expired items on the shelves and no hot water.
• Sunmart #363 located at 333 Lutcher Drive in Orange. Score: 87. Demerits are for 146 expired items on the shelves, dead roaches and live ants near the coolers, heavy mold inside the ice machine and the racks inside the coolers in need of being cleaned of old foods.
• Sonic Drive Inn located at 2250 Texas Ave. in Bridge City. Score: 97.
• Chicken Express located at 2250 Texas Ave. in Bridge City. Score: 100.
• California Corn Dog Stand located at 795 Texas Ave. in Bridge City. Score: 94. Demerits are for air filter exposed to the outside of the A/C unit.
• Gateway Travel Plaza located at 1480 West Freeway Blvd. in Vidor. Score: 89. Demerits are for in need of name and address on all bags of ice sold and 41 expired items on the shelves.
• Paul’s Seafood Connection located at 8752 Highway 12 in Mauriceville. Score: 93. Demerits are for defrosting fish inside the three compartment sink.
