WO fast tracks permit to repair old Ci Ci’s building

WEST ORANGE — Weekly inspections  at 3107 Edgar Brown Drive will happen as a result of a resolution passed during the West Orange City Council meeting.

A Public Hearing held at 5:15 Monday concerned the structure which has remained vacant since September 2005.

The resolution passed at the 5:30 Regular City Council meeting listed the items that needed to be repaired and a time frame in which to have them completed including repairs to the roof, updating the electrical system and installing a burglary alarm.

The owners met with Dean Fuller, fire marshall and building inspector and agreed to the repairs and making attempts to rent the building.

Fuller said he estimated it would cost between $150,000 - $175,000 to repair the building.

“We have fast tracked the permit for the repairs,” Fuller said. “That means we will be inspecting weekly to ensure the work is being completed in a timely manner.”

Fuller said he explained to the owners that the work must be done in 90 days.

“Ninety-one days will not be acceptable,” Fuller said.

City Councilman Dale Dardeau said he was concerned the rent would go up because of the cost of the repairs.

Concerns for the structure and the repairs needed has required the city to bring the issue to court previously.

“We have been dealing with this 4-5 years now,” Fuller said. “And been to court a few times. Another 90 days will not be a problem.”

If the repairs are not made, the city can proceed with the steps needed to demolish the building.
