Volunteer fire-fighting is a very rewarding and valuable way to serve ones community. It takes dedication and many hours of training to become a firefighter.
Pinehurst Volunteer Fire Department is looking for volunteers to serve the department.
The first step is picking up an application, currently available at the old firehouse, 3646 Mockingbird Street.
The new location is currently being remodeled.
“Many of our volunteers are shift workers,” Gyrome Hadnot, fire marshal, said.
The average age of volunteers for the fire department is 21. A background check is mandatory for all applicants.
“Any able-body person is welcomed,” Hadnot said. “Everyone is trained the same.”
Volunteers fire departments depend on multi-training. Each volunteer is trained for each position in the department from driving the truck to fire hose.
“Of course, some are better than others in certain areas,” Hadnot said. “But it is important everyone knows each area.”
Hadnot also said there is always something to do around the station when the firefighters are not responding to a call.
“We have to keep equipment maintained,” Hadnot said.
Hadnot has been a firefighter since 1985 and can still recall the first fire he to which he responded.
“It was a beauty shop that burned down,” Hadnot said. “It was so cold that night, somewhere between 15-18 degrees.”
