BRIDGE CITY —
A man with strong ties to his community and a penchant for helping others has been selected as the Citizen of the Year.
The Honorable Jimmie Scales, associate judge for the Bridge City Municipal Court for more than 17 years, will be recognized as the 2012 Citizen of the Year at the Bridge City Chamber of Commerce’s Taste of the Bayou Annual Banquet at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 14, inside the Bridge City Community Center. Scales, a graduate of Bridge City High School and a lifelong resident of Bridge City, was very humbled by the award.
“You never expect this, but it is very gratifying,” Scales said in a telephone interview. “I was very surprised when I received the call about being chosen as the Citizen of the Year. It does mean a lot to me because Bridge City is home.”
Scales, the oldest of eight children, said he and his siblings were raised to help people and to give back to others.
“We’ve all been on boards of some kind, whether it was for school, the city, county or even the library,” Scales added with a slight laugh. “You always wish you could do more, but you do what you can with what you got. I just try to help people when I can.”
Along with the honor being presented to Scales, several recognitions will be made of ambassadors with the Bridge City Chamber of Commerce. Also on the agenda is the awarding of the 2012 Business of the Year.
This year there are three nominees under consideration for the Business of the Year award. Nominees include Advanced Dental, Bridge City Bank and KOGT radio.
Advanced Dental, under the leadership of Dr. Mark Messer, opened in 1975 and has grown considerably over the years with the addition of new dentists, hygienists, staff and extending hours until 7 p.m. twice per week and open on Saturday.
Bridge City Bank is considered to be a cornerstone business in the community and opened in 1960.
With over 50 years of service to the residents of Bridge City and throughout Orange County with a branch located in Orange, Bridge City Bank has always placed a high emphasis on delivering the highest level of personal service to their customers.
KOGT 1600 AM radio, owned by Gary Stelly, has a long history of providing news, sports and other important information to its listeners over the airwaves and, for approximately 15 years, via the Internet at www.kogt.com. Stelly, who often can be found behind the microphone at games and even special events as Master of Ceremonies, was a key figure in keeping Orange County residents informed during Hurricanes Rita and Ike.
The Bridge City Chamber of Commerce invites the community to come out on Monday, Jan. 14 and find out who will win this year’s Business of the Year Award.
Also, this year’s banquet will feature a large variety food samples from some of the areas finest food establishments including Peggy’s on the Bayou, Tico’s Cuban Café, Elements Bakery and Café, Market Basket, Chicken Express, Robert’s Restaurant, Dominos Pizza, Novrosky’s, Hunter’s Seasonings, Kirks on 87, Hushpuppies. Entertainment will be provided by the Gulf Coast Cajuns.
