Water rates will be on the rise starting in March following the approval a new city ordinance.
Councilmembers in Rose City voted 3-2 to increase water rates for its customers at its monthly council meeting held recently. This means the city's water customers can expect a 12 percent increase in rates effective March 1.
Expenditures for the city's water department were far more than the water departments revenue it generated in 2012. According to figures, the water department expenses were more than $109,000 in 2012, while its revenue was barely more than $78,000, or a deficit of just over $31,000.
The current water rates for customers within the city limits of Rose City are $35.50 for the first 2,000 gallons. There is a charge of $5.35 per 1,000 gallons used after that. The new monthly rate will be $39.75 per month for the first 2,000 gallons and a charge of $5.50 per 1,000 gallons used following that.
The current rate for customers outside the city limits of Rose City is $53.25 for the first 2,000 gallons and a charge of $8.03 per 1,000 gallons following that. The new rate, also going into effect on Friday, March 1, is $59.63 per month for the first 2,000 gallons used and a charge of $8.25 per 1,000 gallons used following that.
