BEAUMONT —
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers will be stepping up enforcement efforts to ensure safety on the roadways this holiday season. DWI patrols will increase from Dec. 21 through Jan. 1, 2013 targeting intoxicated drivers and reducing alcohol-related crashes.
During the Christmas and New Year’s Holidays in 2011, troopers made 1,100 driving while intoxicated (DWI) arrests. In addition, troopers issued more than 15,000 speeding citations and 2,000 safety restraint citations.
From Dec. 20, 2011 through Jan. 1, 2012, troopers in Hardin, Jefferson and Orange counties investigated a combined 59 crashes and 11 of those crashes were alcohol-related.
Additional troopers will be on the road targeting drunk drivers and others who violate Texas traffic laws. Public awareness campaigns such as “Click It or Ticket” and “Over the Limit, Under Arrest” are tools used by law enforcement to spotlight important traffic related issues, but these public awareness campaigns must be reinforced through the personal responsibility of all drivers.
DPS strongly encourages positive driving behavior and offers the following tips for Holiday travel:
• Minimize distractions as much as possible. Don’t text and drive.
• Don’t drink and drive; designate a sober driver.
• Don’t travel fatigued. Switch drivers or find a safe location and take a break.
• Be aware of, and prepared for, changing weather conditions.
• Adjust speed for traffic conditions and emergency vehicles.
• Make sure everyone in the car is buckled up.
