HUNTSVILLE, Texas —
A 33-year-old convicted killer is facing execution for fatally shooting an off-duty Houston police sergeant.
Anthony Haynes is set to die Thursday evening in Huntsville for the death of Kent Kincaid 14 years ago. The officer and his wife were about a block from their Houston-area home and headed to meet some friends at a sports bar when an object from a passing pickup truck cracked their vehicle's windshield.
Kincaid drove up alongside the truck and both vehicles pulled over. He got out, told the people in the pickup he was a police officer and was reaching to produce his ID when Haynes pulled a gun and shot him in the head.
Haynes' lawyers are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to stop the punishment.
