EL PASO, Texas —
A high school principal removed from duty over his involvement in a West Texas district's standardized test cheating scandal has resigned.
El Paso Independent School District Superintendent Vernon Butler says the resignation of former Bowie High School principal Jesus Chavez was accepted Monday and he is leaving the district. Chavez had been re-assigned to administrative duties in April.
The district's former superintendent, Lorenzo Garcia, is serving a 3 1/2-year federal prison term for organizing a scheme that included forcing students to drop out to keep them from taking high-stakes accountability exams. Most of the cases were at Bowie.
Garcia was trying to improve the district's ratings so he would qualify for bonuses.
Chavez's departure comes after the state's top public school official demanded strict sanctions for those involved.
