Paul wrote in Colossians on being a witness. “Live wisely among those who are not Christians, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and effective so that you will have the right answer for everyone.” (Colossians 4:5-6)
Whether we like it or not we have a role in the world that doesn’t sleep; whose responsibility we cannot shake. It is a 24 hour, 7 day a week responsibility, and that is our witness. If we call ourselves Christian, we have a witness. Some people like to put the emphasis of our witness, on the words we say. That we have a story of faith to tell and that is true, each of us should have a story of faith to share. That is just a small part of our witness. Let me explain with a story. I have a dear friend that has a great story of faith concerning how God touched his life. He also has a living story that is told in his actions. And that story is told loud and clear. He is very competitive and when it comes to winning, he will do anything to win, even cheat. It is very sad that his witness is marred by his lack of integrity and honesty.
The old adage “actions speak louder than words” was adopted by our church Youth a few years ago, who coined the phrase “Live Out Loud” as the theme of their mission trip. Meaning that their faith would be displayed in their actions.
Paul wrote to live wisely in front of those who are not Christians in order to encourage them to become Christian, but he should have gone farther. We should treat one another, Christian or not, with love and respect. God created us all in His image. It would be good if we could train our eyes to see His Son in our neighbor.
Too often I have been the referee to a bunch of Christians behaving badly toward one another. (Thankfully, not recently) The greatest witness we can give is to try our best to be imitators of one life. Not to be like our best friend or someone in Hollywood, not even Paul in the Bible. The only one we are to imitate is Jesus.
If we can resemble His life in any way, we have come a long way on our journey, and our witness will be one that will affect lives in a positive way.
