Why do people often experience a fear of commitment? What is it about commitment that cause people to stumble, stutter or stall?
Wealth, power and status can be powerful motivators that will leave to committing and pledging to matters, members and mysteries for which we really have not counted the cost.
It is very easy to get caught up in the success brought about through commitment.
One of the most powerful figures in the National Basketball Association’s history is Michael Jordan.
Jordan is held in high esteem by most basketball lovers for the number of championships he has won. Biography.com reports that he won a NCAA basketball title in 1982, and received the College Player of the Year honors in 1983 and 1984. In 1992 he was a member of what is considered the Olympic Gold Medal “Dream Team.” As a member of the Chicago Bulls, he received the NBA Rookie of the Year award, five regular season MVPs and three All-Star MVPs.
All of these accomplishments can motivate, but the one thing that very few articles report is Michael’s level of commitment. Michael’s commitment and dedication to hard work is what helped him to not only be but to remain successful and to achieve something good can be a matter of convenience.
To maintain a life of goodness is a matter of commitment.
Are you committed? What are you committed to? Are you willing to do what it takes to reach your goal or are you just looking for convenience?
No matter how hard the journey, commitment is the portal that will lead us to success. Commitment requires a dedication to sometimes do what we would not like to do so that we will achieve our desired goal.
We must also be cautious about what we commit ourselves to. If we commit ourselves to convenience, we will only produce convenient, temporary gratification.
Whenever we commit to that which is lasting, that commitment will in turn produce committed gratification.
This concept is expressed in the commitment that God has for His creation. For God so loved the world that He committed to send His Song who was committed to give His life so we could have the opportunity to commit to life, life more abundantly.
What would our life be like? We would we be today if Jesus chose convenience over commitment?
