ORANGE —
Shortly after being married, my wife and I moved to North Carolina for a year or so.
We lived in a small town near Charlotte and became acquainted with many wonderful people and with some unfamiliar customs. Having lived in Texas all my life I thought I was rather savvy to various speech patterns and expressions. I soon learned how wrong I was. One day, while talking with a man, I heard him say, “It was like buying a pig in a poke.”
I had never heard that before.
Come to find out it is one of the oldest expressions in many countries including the US dating back at least 500 years.
Actually it’s very sage advice because the expression, “to buy a pig in a poke” means that something is sold or bought without the buyer knowing its true nature or value or buying without inspecting the item beforehand.
I don’t mean to get too personal here, but, have you ever been guilty of doing this?
Invest in this stock, buy this car, marry this man or marry this woman, put a little money down—it’s guaranteed, you can’t lose, etc., etc.
We are asked to “buy a pig in a poke.
In matters of one’s soul, buying a pig in a poke, is not only dangerous but deadly because one is dealing with matters that spell the difference between eternal life and eternal death.
Great care is called for.
Satan is first and foremost a liar, trickster, fraud and deceiver. No matter what anyone may say, Jesus is the only Savior from sin.
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father [God], but by me” (John 14:6).
No matter what anyone may say, Jesus was God manifest in the flesh; “ And the Word (Christ) became flesh (human, incarnate) and tabernacled (fixed His tent of flesh, lived awhile) among us” (John 1:14).
He gave his life—shed his blood—rose again and ascended to heaven to sit at the right hand of God on His Majestic throne.
No matter what anyone may say Jesus will return to this earth to rule as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Don’t take my word for it.
Don’t take the preacher’s word for it, or the teachers, or the best friend.
To believe anything else is to “buy a pig in a poke.”
