Did you know that the Raytheon Company built the first “Radarange”, the first commercially available microwave oven in 1947? Did you know that it was almost 5’11” tall and weighed 750 pounds? It cost about $5,000 or $52,042 in today’s dollars. The evolution of the microwave has been staggering and current estimates say that over 90% of American households own a microwave oven. The first food to be deliberately cooked in a microwave was popcorn, and the second was an egg. The egg exploded in the face of one of the experimenters.
One reason why the microwave is so popular is because of the speed with which we can prepare food or drink. It takes only seconds to reheat a cup of lukewarm coffee or to change a cold piece of apply pie to warm and delicious. Other foods may be cooked cutting off several minutes of cooking time from the traditional range oven or top burner.
Have you noticed how this idea of quickness and speed has leached into our prayer life? We have become so mesmerized by the speed with which we can obtain things we order and the seconds it takes to prepare our food or drink. Have we fallen under the illusion that we now believe when we pray God must answer us immediately (if not sooner) and give us what we want right now (if not quicker)? Have we become “Microwave Christians” praying the 10-second prayer and expecting a dramatic answer?
From Isaiah 40:31 the Lord says in very explicit language that, “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.”
Here are further exhortations to practice, to live out, and to follow this not-to-common spiritual counsel. For example: “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD” (Psalm 27:14); “Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it” (Psalm 37:34) and, “Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee” (Proverbs 20:22).
Can we wait as we are commanded? Yes, because the Holy Spirit is our Helper. “For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith” (Galatians 5:5).
The Holy Sprit strengthens our resolve to wait. Faith helps us obtain the answer.
