The Caring Kitchen at Mount Olive Baptist Church will have a new name on Sunday, March 24 when it is dedicated to The Rose Watson Caring Kitchen.
Mount Olive Baptist Church, 106 West Park Ave. in Orange, has helped feed the community by opening the kitchen to everyone at noon each Thursday since Feb. 1988.
Rev. Ronnie Crockett said they only ask that people bow their heads while they say grace.
“Everyone is welcomed regardless of current situations,” Crockett said.
Crockett has been the pastor at the church for 22 years.
“Sister Watson’s good strength and determination is the driving force in the kitchen,” Crockett said. “I cannot recall her missing many times. She has seen many seasons of change as volunteers come and go.”
Rev, Clarence Williams, the pastor at the time, and the Senior Mission formed The Caring Kitchen on the belief of Matthew 25:35, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in”.
The first meal was barbecued meat and side dishes donated by members of the church. Rose Watson is one of the volunteers at the kitchen.
Watson, 88, has been a member of the church for 67 years. She is the Mother of the church, Deaconess, Mission Sister as well as working in the Caring Kitchen.
Crockett describes Watson as the epitome of a Christian.
Watson said the church did not have to dedicate the kitchen to her.
“I was working for the Lord,” Watson said. “Not for praises.”
Watson said she enjoys making desserts.
“I thank the church for honoring me,” Watson said. “To God be the glory, if not for Him, it wouldn’t be.”
Mount Olive Baptist Church will honor 103 years 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 24.
