The church I serve is a buzz with meetings, and hopes of meeting the challenges of ministry with a new gusto and enthusiasm. There are lives to save and souls to awaken.
Then I woke up.
It seems the cough medicine I took before bed had me dreaming out of my head.
If you are like most of the folks in churches today, you are dreading being asked to teach a Sunday School class or doing something that is beyond your skill, at least in your mind’s eye you think it is more than you can handle.
You are not alone. In the book of Exodus you will find God calling a man, who in his eyes would make a great courageous leader. Now most of us would not think so. The man God chose was a runaway, a fugitive and a murderer. The man himself did not see himself as a leader. Yet, God saw something he did not. We find the scene, which really turns out to be a verbal debate between God and Moses; for the conversation covers two chapters. Moses is in front of the burning bush arguing with God about going back to Egypt. So far the conversation has gone like this: God tells Moses to take off his shoes.
Then God tells Moses, "I have seen the suffering of my people and heard their cries, and I am going to save them."
So far so good.
But then God tells Moses, "I am sending you to Pharaoh to lead my people out of Egypt. Go!"
Moses protests, "Who am I to do this job?" God answers, "It is not who you are, but who I am. I will be with you!"
I can relate to Moses. I was called to ministry at an early age. I was a pretty headstrong and determined young man. I was declared legally blind; in a time before students were mainstreamed into the classroom with the sighted but I fought that battle and won.
When God called me to ministry my reply was, “You must be kidding, I can’t see!”
I knew who I was but I underestimated who God is! Be brave and serve the Lord for all things are possible through him. I am pleased to say I serve a great church with many great servants of God.
