ORANGE —
My wife and I were talking to friends on the phone.
They shared with us that they had purchased a pair of the new I-Phone 5s.
That’s just what I needed to hear because my wife thinks she needs a new I-Phone. My wedding present to her, a year and nine months ago, was the I-Phone she needed.
Shouldn’t a wedding present last longer than a year and nine months? My question is how can you be content with what you have?
Paul is an excellent example of contentment.
Paul wrote the following words while he was sitting in a prison cell in Rome awaiting execution. “I have learned to be content with whatever I have.”
“I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty.”
“In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need” (Philippians 4:11-12).
Can we learn to be content in whatever circumstance we find ourselves?
Adam Hamilton in his book, “Enough” suggests there are four things to consider in seeking to be content.
First, remember it could be worse.
For my wife, who has a year and nine month old phone, she could have my four year old phone instead with the volume button missing.
Then consider the question, “How long will this make me happy?”
Many times you buy something you think will make you happy, and you find the feeling fades and it’s simply not worth the expense. One of the greatest keys to being happy is to develop a grateful heart. A grateful heart recognizes that all of life is a gift. Contentment comes when we spend more time “giving thanks” for what we have, than thinking about what we do not have.
“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus, for you. (I Thessalonians 5:18)
Contrary to what Apple would have us believe, real contentment cannot be bought with a two year contract.
We have a deeper need where contentment is concerned.
Our souls long for something that money cannot buy, no matter how great the packaging or the hype. The Bible tells us that real contentment can only be found in God.
Hebrews 13:5-6 reads: “Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for Christ has said, ‘I will never leave you or forsake you.’
So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is our helper, we will not be afraid.” Hebrews 13:5-6
