ORANGE —
As I watched the morning news, the Commentator asked his Co-Host in small talk, “Did you know that Christmas is only two and a half weeks away?”
It was like an atomic bomb went off in my head!
Two and a half weeks and I have so much to do! The only present I have is the one for my wife. The rest of the family, I have not gotten a cotton picking thing. I do not even know where to start.
Plus I have an anniversary present and a birthday present to purchase before Christmas. So if you see me in the stores with a dazed look on my face you will know why.
With all the shopping and gatherings, I have decided the best thing to keep Jesus in my celebration, is to set aside a bit of time each day to read the wondrous birth story over again. And while I am in the car, I tune the radio to Christmas carols. I am listening to Carolyn Miller, our pianist and Justin Sanders, our organist practice their Christmas music, which will be played on Christmas Eve at First United Methodist Church. It is beautiful! So where should I start my Christmas shopping? Why not start with the most important present, the one I give to Jesus.
My father died while I was away at seminary. I was sent a sympathy card with these words and a check, “The best way we can show a Father’s love is to support his son.”
The best way I can show my Savior love is to support the church and its mission that He gave His life to establish. We have many great causes that call for our attention but none that match the goal of sharing the Good News of His birth with the world.
It is a spiritual thing for Sandra and I to give a gift to the church, just as we give a gift to a family member.
Then we get the joy of watching the ministry grow from the gift. I bet if you did the same, the ministry of your church will grow as well.
“For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon His shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” -Isaiah 9:6
