It is amazing to me how interested we are in hair.
The President of the greatest country in the world is about to give a speech to the country and the world; and all we hear on the news is about the First Lady’s new cut.
Hair has been a big thing for a long time. My mother could be at death’s door and she would still go to the beauty shop. My wife used to drive two hours to go the same beautician instead of looking for someone new.
“They may not have ‘my’ color,” she would say.
I have to admit that, I too, have made my hair darker. Ok, who am I fooling, I colored it. I was known to do Elvis impressions several times a year. We all know he wasn’t gray. I like to say that my hair turned gray soon after getting married.
Hair has held a lot of power. People are judged by it. In my teen years if you had long hair you were labeled a “hippie” which automatically meant you were a drug user and smoker of various substances. Then we had the period of the “skin heads” which indicated that you were a bigot or red neck. Hair and the interest in it can be found also in the Bible.
When Samson fell for Delilah, a woman from the Valley of Sorek, it marked the beginning of his downfall and eventual demise. It didn't take long for the rich and powerful Philistine rulers to learn of the affair between the two and immediately pay a visit to Delilah. You see, Samson was judge over Israel at the time and had been taking out great vengeance on the Philistines-but that's another story. Hoping to capture Samson, the Philistine leaders each offered Delilah a sum of money to collaborate with them in a scheme to uncover the secret of Samson's great strength. Using her powers of seduction and deception, Delilah persistently wore down Samson with her repeated requests, until he finally divulged the crucial information. Having taken the Nazirite vow at birth, Samson had been set apart to God. As part of that vow, his hair was never to be cut. When Samson told Delilah that his strength would leave him if a razor were to be used on his head, she cunningly crafted her plan with the Philistine rulers. And with just a snip-snip his power was gone.
The moral of the story could be, “only my hairdresser knows for sure”, but keep your promises to God.
