ORANGE —
The Bible’s story of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17) has always fascinated me.
Like so many other OT stories it serves to illustrate valuable and encouraging truths everyone can use for daily living. Rooted in its Hebrew text lies the fact that David, just an ordinary shepherd boy, was a mere teenager when he faced the giant Goliath. Was he exceptionally talented? Not that we know of. He was a bright, handsome and healthy teen who had perfected his use of the slingshot. Plus, he was courageous having successfully beaten attacks by a lion and a bear.
With just that in mind let’s make this application: “God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty“ (1Corinthians 1:27).
If this means anything, it means anyone who is willing, ready and surrendered to do God’s will, (with no outstanding talent or notable abilities), can be an instrument of God’s purpose in family, church or community. “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine….”
Goliath was indeed a giant ten feet tall wearing a metallic suit weighing 125-pounds. One man alone carried his shield. When David charged up the hill toward Goliath, the giant scoffed and bellowed curses at David. Sometimes, like David, we face overwhelming odds that appear to have all the advantage against us. But, also like David, we must react with our faith in God remembering the past victories, how God has helped us, how God delivered us from lion and bear problems and that the present problem is no exception.
“And what shall I more say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthah; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens (Hebrews 11: 32-34).
We may rely on three rock-solid things: God’s promises; God’s power; God’s faithfulness to stand behind his word of promise and power. Consider the size of your God and not the size of the problem.
God is able to make all grace abound to you.
