VIDOR —
Vidor Junior High School Wendy Lapyrolerie and her students received a $300 grant from the Vidor Schools Foundation for a project called “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Reclaim.”
Ms. Lapyrolerie purchased recycling bins and tubs, gloves, and plastic bags to teach students to collect recyclable materials. The data collected, such as weight and types of items, was used to teach graphing.
The students collected 32 pounds of trash in one day and also had a “Bag Off,” collecting over 2,000 plastic bags to be recycled rather than placed in a landfill.
Many of the other teachers got involved when they learned that recycling was available. They recycled scrap paper, water bottles and plastic bags. According to one student, it opened her eyes to how much we throw away and what it’s doing to our environment.
