ORANGE —
Mary McKenna, Executive Director of Southeast Texas Hospice, spoke to Mrs. Smith's Leadership Class at St. Mary Catholic School on Friday. She talked to the students about the care that hospice provides terminally ill patients, explaining that hospice not only cares for the physical needs but also the psychological, social, financial, and spiritual needs of the patient and their family in the comfort and privacy of their own home.
McKenna, who is a 1968 graduate of St. Mary High School in Orange, told the students her inspiring story - the story of a young woman from Orange, Texas who went to Washington D.C. and testified before Congress to help get new laws passed that allowed hospice care to be covered by insurance and medicare so that millions of people could receive compassionate care at home during their final days. She explained how this was one of her most nervous moments in life, as well as one of her proudest achievements.
Sharing her thoughts on leadership, McKenna told the students that she believes a NO is only a YES in disquise, and that if you can picture it in your mind and you believe it in your heart, you can accomplish anything. She told the students that she can't wait to hear about their future achievements and the great ideas and contributions they will one day give to the world.
