Little Cypress Junior High held a campus level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Thursday morning, December 10. John Nichols won the event with a correct answer to the question, “After the United States and France, which island country generates the most power from nuclear energy?” (The answer is Japan.) Winning second place was Devin Gunter, and Jason Picard took third.
Nichols will advance to the next level of competition, a written examination, which will determine state competitors. The national championship will be held on May 25, 2010 in Washington, D.C. and comes with a $25,000 college scholarship. This is the 22nd year that the National Geographic Bee has been held for students in grades four through eight. The 2010 Bee is sponsored by Google and is held in thousands of schools throughout the U.S. and the five U.S. territories.
John Nichols is the son of John and Nancy Nichols. Devin Gunter’s parents are Angela Gunter and Dwight Gunter, and Jason Picard’s parents are Brandon and Amy Picard. LCJH teacher Debbie Stevens coordinates the Bee for the school.
