LU’s Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities offers preview day
Lamar University’s residential dual-credit program for high school juniors and seniors will offer its semiannual glimpse into the opportunities provided for gifted and talented high school seniors at its fall preview day, Monday, Nov. 9.
The tuition-free residential honors program, one of only two in the state, grants outstanding high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to complete their final two years of high school while simultaneously earning 60 or more hours of college credit. Students in the academy perform community service, participate in a variety of leadership forums, and benefit from other activities and programs sponsored by the program.
“Academically, TALH is a liberal arts program, but our broader purpose is to foster leadership skills through exposure to a variety of humanities-based programs, including community service,” said Scott Stevenson, admissions director of the academy. “At the core of any meaningful understanding of ‘leadership’ is a moral sensibility and our goal is to cultivate this sensibility, along with the courage to live your principles, in our students.”
The preview day kicks off with a 9:30 a.m. pre-registration in the university reception center on the eighth floor of the Mary and John Gray Library on the Lamar campus. The event lasts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes presentations of the program from students and faculty alike, with students discussing their reaction to the academy. Other highlights are financial aid information and an overview of the campus. The day concludes with a question/answer panel for the students.
Mary Gagne, director of the academy, looks forward to enlightening a group of potential students to the benefits of the academy.
“Each day I am inspired by the compassionate leadership of our students. They are given the opportunity to lead in academics and service to the community. While our students take a traditional liberal arts education, they are also enrolled in Lamar’s noted math, science, and engineering departments,” Gagne said. “I welcome those who are interested in joining our program and learning from some of the best professors society has to offer.”
